Simple Tips for Cleaning Blinds

Simple Tips for Cleaning Blinds

Many people avoid cleaning their blinds because it seems like such a fuss. The dust just seems to fly everywhere and settle right back in the same spot. So what's the point? Well, the problem is ineffective technique. Learning some easier and more efficient methods might just motivate us to clean our blinds more often! Continue reading to learn how to clean blinds without a fuss.

How to Clean Blinds

How to Clean BlindsBefore technique comes tools and products. Using a higher quality product or tool can mean all the difference when it comes to dusting blinds. For example, a regular paper towel sheet will not pick up dust and dirt, it will only spread it more. Trade out paper towel for a microfiber cloth, dry sponge, or lamb's wool duster. These materials actually pick up dust particles. Also, you will need a vacuum with a brush attachment. Just be sure your vacuum basin and filters are clear before using it. Aside from tools, quality products are a huge help as well. A blind cleaner or shine product will provide a longer-lasting luster, making your blinds appear cleaner for longer.

First use the vacuum brush attachment and suction across the blind slats from side to side. This will suction up all the loose dust and debris, making it easier to get a more thorough clean in the following steps.

Next, use your lamb's wool duster, dry sponge, or microfiber cloth to firmly wipe off the slats, using the same side to side motion. If blinds are vertical, wipe from top to bottom in an up and down motion to prevent entanglement and breakage.

Now it is time to use your product. This can be an all-purpose cleaner or a product specially formulated and designed for cleaning blinds. Be sure the product is safe to use on the material of your blinds. Wood blinds will require a separate formula than vinyl or plastic blinds.

Apply the cleaning solution spray to a clean cloth and wipe each slat individually for a thorough comb-through. Do not spray cleaner onto blinds directly.

Additional Types of Blinds

Cleaning BlindsIf you have fabric blinds, you should take them to a dry cleaner. Wooden blinds should not be soaked in water or any other type of heavy solution. Take caution when cleaning wood blinds with a cleaner and do not let the wood get too wet.

Metal blinds need to be removed, taken outside, placed on a large blanket or rug, and power sprayed with a hose. Before spraying with a hose, add a few drops of dishwashing liquid and scrub the planks with a cleaning brush. Then rinse thoroughly with a hose supplied with clean water. Allow them to dry for 12 hours and then replace them back to their original spot.

For offices and commercial buildings, cleaning blinds can be quite the project. For this reason, it is necessary to hire a commercial cleaning company to manage all the larger and more complex cleaning projects and agendas on the property.

Social Media: Has Social Media Devalued Celebrity?

Social Media: Has Social Media Devalued Celebrity?

While celebrities have always existed in some shape or form, it has never been as easy as it is today for someone to be famous. There is no need for someone to have achieved something significant; the only thing they need is an online presence.

HUMAN HAIR WIGS

This is something that one can develop in a matter of weeks or even hours; it is no longer necessary for one to wait for a prolonged period of time. For example, if someone creates something that ends up going ‘viral', it can end up being seen by millions of people in a matter minutes.

A Star Is Born

When this happens, one can go from being a relative unknown to someone who is known by people from all over the world. And while this may relate to a video that they have made that demonstrates a certain talent or skill, this might not be the case.

It could just be a video that makes other people laugh, or they might be sharing their life with others. This is not to say that comedy has no value or someone's life has no importance; what it comes down to is how times have changed.

Values

Even though one generation values something, it doesn't mean next generation will have the same outlook. This is why it is to be expected that there will be a difference when it comes to who each generation elevates.

HUMAN HAIR WIGS

Although there will still be some people who have values that match up with the values people had in the past, it is not always possible for someone to realise this. And this is because their attention might be consumed by what is taking place in the mainstream.

The Mainstream

When it comes down to what people believe about the world, or about the people who inhabit the planet, there is strong chance that they developed these views through being exposed to the mainstream media. One reason for this is that it takes effort to think, and how one doesn't need to think if they let others do it for them.

So on one side, this will allow one to save energy, but on the other, it will set them up to be manipulated. This is not the say that everything the media presents is false, but at the same time, it would be dangerous to believe everything.

Control

In the past, the mainstream media and the other establishments would have had most of the power when it came to who would be famous. But the internet has changed this, and this have given people far more control than ever before when it comes to whether they will be famous or not.

It has been said that everyone wants to be famous, and in today's world, this is something that one can make a reality. And while they will need other people to elevate them into a certain position, they won't need other people to give them any kind of financial backing in order to ‘make it big'.

Suppression

If one does have the need to be famous, they will no longer have to suppress this need. They can embrace how they feel, and do what they need to do in order to fulfil this need.

The first thing they can do is to look at what other people are doing, and then come up with the same thing or something similar. From here, they can set up an account on a social media site.

Saturated

Once they begin to look into what other people are doing, they might start to get an idea of what they need to do to be famous. However, this might also make them think about how saturated the internet has become with people who are ‘famous'.

During this time, they may begin to see how anyone can be famous, and that it doesn't matter what they look like, how talented they are, or whether they are adding value to the world. So even though they may feel inspired by what they see, it might also cause them to feel overwhelmed.

Meaningless

If everyone drove around in an expensive car, the car would no longer stand out, and this is because it wouldn't be exclusive. These cars wouldn't have the same value, and they would just be seen as another car on the road.

When a small amount of people are famous, it will be normal for them to stand out, and this is because there are far more people who are not famous. Yet, if fame is no longer limited to a select few, it will start to lose its meaning.

Valueless

And just as the quality of something can go down when it is massed produced, the same can apply when there is an increase in the amount of people who are famous. If one was famous in the past, there was the chance that they had achieved something significant, but there is less chance of this being the case today.

In many ways, being famous can be seen as something that one experiences because they are alive at this time. Through living in this age, one might have come to believe that they deserve to be famous.

Conclusion

There is then no need for them to make a contribution to the world, and this is because they are entitled to be famous. This shows how people's values have changed, and while it would be easy to blame social media, there are other factors involved.

What this could also show is that there is lack of guidance in today's world, and this is why fame is seen as the ‘answer' to one's problems. Even though we are more ‘connected' than we have ever been, it could also be said that we are more disconnected than we have ever been.

Summary and Analysis of The Old Man and the Sea

Evening Dresses
The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway is the tale of an old man's fishing escapade and attempts at breaking his streak of bad luck. This article describes the theme and summary of the novel.

Analysis of 'The Old Man and the Sea'
The Old Man and the Sea won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1953 and became one of Ernest Hemingway's bestselling works.
The Old Man and the Sea was written in the year 1951 and published the subsequent year. It was also printed in the September 1st issue of Life Magazine in the year 1952.
Evening Dresses
The story is an allegory of the author's own struggles to achieve fame and keep writing. This was Hemingway's last significant contribution to the literary world which restored his fame as an acclaimed author. Hemingway was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature for this novel, in the year 1954. However, he donated his gold medal to the Cuban image of Our Lady of Charity.

The novella inspired many on-screen adaptations, viz. a film in 1958, a miniseries in the year 1990, and an animated short film, in the year 1999. Till date, the book remains an important piece of literature and an integral part of high school curriculum. Following is the summary and analysis of The Old Man and the Sea.

Summary
The story begins by introducing the protagonist of the story, Santiago. He was an old fisherman who had not caught a single fish for eighty-four days. He was considered so unlucky, that his devout companion, friend, and young apprentice Manolin, was forced to work for a successful businessman, leaving Santiago to fish alone.

Manolin adored the old man and continued helping him in any way that he could. The young boy would visit Santiago's shack every night, where he'd cooked for Santiago and help him prepare for the next day. They often would reminisce their luckier times and talk about American baseball. And at night, Santiago would dream of lions on African beaches that he had once visited.

Early dawn, on the 85th day, Santiago set off alone into the sea, determined to break the spell of bad luck. He set his lines and waited patiently to catch a fish. By noon, he had caught a marlin, Santiago believed that his luck was finally about to change for the good.

Santiago used his years of experience and skill to play the fish. He tried to pull the fish onto the boat, but to no avail. The marlin towed the boat deeper into the sea. Santiago waited for the fish to tire itself. Day turned to dusk, and the old man found himself towed further away from land. The marlin kept Santiago struggling all night long. The cold weather and jerks that the fish gave took a toll on his hands, shoulders, and back. All that kept Santiago company through those tough times were trips down memory lane. He remembered those days when men had called him El Campeón, as he wrestled with men at a tavern.

Two days and nights had passed and the struggle between the fish and Santiago continued. On the third day, the marlin too began to tire. Santiago killed the marlin with his harpoon. He soon realize that it was the largest he had ever seen, and knew that the fish would fetch him quite a fortune. He tied the fish carcass to the side of his skiff and set off on his long journey home.

A shark followed the marlin's blood trail, and just as it began to gnaw at the fish, Santiago killed the beast with his harpoon. The shark disappeared along with his weapon, leaving Santiago vulnerable to more shark attacks.

Soon, more sharks appeared and Santiago relentlessly continued killing them with his knife tied to the oar. After a few shark attacks, he realized that the sharks had eaten the meat off the fish, and had left him with only the head, tail, and skeleton. Santiago finally reached the harbor just before sunrise and he dragged himself to his shack.

In the morning, fishermen and tourists stood gathered and were amazed at what was left of the huge marlin skeleton. Manolin was worried sick about the old man's absence for three days. He teared on finding Santiago sleeping safely in his bed. The boy fetched Santiago some coffee and the newspaper and watched him sleep. When Santiago woke up, the two agreed to fish together once again.

Tired Santiago returned to his sweet slumber, where he once again dreamed of lions, beaches, and the glories of the past.
Themes and Symbolism
Themes
At the first glance, this story might seem simple. But when you take a closer look at the different aspects of the story, you find that the theme of the story revolves around relentless perseverance, strength of the body and mind, pride and respect, overcoming suffering, skills learned from experience, isolation, and memories which reassure you of your strength.
Symbolism
The story mentions that Santiago no longer dreams of his deceased wife. Instead, he dreams of lions on the beaches. The lions symbolize triumph, youth, strength, dominance, and masculinity. Lions and Santiago both were predators. While the lions hunted other animals, Santiago preyed on fish. Beaches, on the other hand, represent freedom, raw untamed nature, and tranquility.
The writer conveys to his readers that, like Santiago, we too might face difficulties which may further complicate our lives, but we must be brave and persist in our journey of life.Evening Dresses

Intriguing Facts About the Goliath Grouper

goliath grouper swimming

Goliath Groupers can grow as big as 8.2 feet in length, and half as wide. Their weight ranges from 180 to a maximum of 360 kilos.

Coming to their shape, they are stocky, have broad heads and tiny eyes. The pectoral and tail fins are rounded, whereas the dorsal fins are connected along the back.

These fish could either be dull green or gray, or dark yellow to brown. They have multiple dark spots on their head, body, and fins. Juveniles are mostly tawny, and have dark bands and blotches.

Goliath Groupers are known by several names including, Atlantic Goliath Grouper, Black Bass, Esonue Grouper, Giant Seabass, Guasa, Hamlet, Jewfish, and Southern/Spotted Jewfish.

In spite of their huge size, these fish feed on crustaceans, small bait fish, and slow-moving poisonous fish like Catfish, Pufferfish, Stingrays, Cowfish, Burrfish, etc. Also, despite its sharp teeth, it swallows the prey whole (and does not chew upon it).

Goliath Groupers breed from July through September; they gather in groups of 100 or more at specific breeding sites for spawning. The fertilized eggs scatter in the water and eventually develop into kite-shaped larvae with long dorsal fins and pelvic fin spines. Juveniles are just 2.5 cm long and prefer settling into mangrove habitats.

The Goliath Grouper is specifically prone to over-fishing due to its large size, slow growth rate, curious and fearless nature, and low reproductive rate. These fish were considered a delicacy prior to receiving a critically endangered status.

Scientists believe that Goliath Groupers have a very long lifespan, and they may live for even a hundred years. However, the highest known age is 37 years.

Goliath Groupers are also referred to as the 'barking fish'. This is because, these fish make a peculiar booming sound (something like that of a bass drum) which can not only be heard but felt as well. These vocalizations are normally termed as barks; they are either used to communicate or to warn intruders trying to access their territories.

These fish are solitary and territorial in nature. Also, they don't move a lot and are always glued to reefs, corals, and rocks in shallow waters, except during the spawning season.

It is believed that like most groupers, Goliaths are protogynous hermaphrodites. This refers to organisms who are born female and undergo a sexual transformation at some point later in their lives.
Evening Dresses
The Goliath Grouper was traditionally referred to as jewfish (as mentioned before), but the American Fisheries Society banned the use of this term (in 2001) as it sounded culturally insensitive.

Wig Maintenance 101

Wig Maintenance 101

Wigs have become popular once again. They are so easy to use if you’re
looking for a quick and easy hair style. And because they come in some many
different styles, there’s sure to be something out there for everyone.

HUMAN HAIR WIGS

Proper wig maintenance will improve your wig’s appearance and longevity.
And wig maintenance is not very expensive; it just requires a little bit of
time and effort. Here are some important steps to follow.

1) Wig maintenance begins with detangling. First, gently brush out your wig
to remove any tangles (unless the wig is extremely curly and/or it came with
a tag telling you that it shouldn't be brushed). Most of the longer styles
will become quite matted towards the back, and it may be necessary to
separate the tangled strands gently with your fingers. Apply Simply Stylin’
Light Silk Spray to aid in brushing and easy removal of any tangles. Because
it’s made of pure silicone, Simply Stylin’ is perfect for aiding in wig
maintenance without drying the hair.

If you have a synthetic hair wig, it is important to use combs and brushes
that are designed for use on synthetic wigs. If you are using a regular
hairbrush or comb, be sure it has the rubber tips at the end of each brush
bristle or tooth of the comb. This will prevent the fibers from splitting,
and keep the wig from looking fuzzy and dull before its time.

2) Shampooing your wig correctly is also an important part of proper wig
maintenance. When the wig is ready to be washed, fill the sink with about 2
quarts of cool water. Never use hot water, as this could relax the curl that
was set into the wig during the manufacturing process. Pour about 2 capfuls
of a gentle shampoo into the water and then submerge the wig. When the wig
is fully wet, swish it around for about a minute and then let soak for about
another minute.

HUMAN HAIR WIGS

3) Remove the wig and rinse in cold water until no suds remain. Then place
the wig on a bath towel to completely dry overnight. It is all right to blot
the wig with a towel, but don’t twist the wig or ring it out. You can use
your fingers to gently separate and arrange the strands as the wig is
drying, but don’t try to comb or brush the wig while still wet. The fibers
could be stretched to the breaking point.

Geodesic Dome Greenhouse: Merits and Drawbacks

Geodesic Dome Greenhouse: Merits and Drawbacks

FORMAL DRESSES

Merits
The Geodesic Dome is a very strong stucture due to the use of triangles in
the design. It is rigid and stable and transmits any stresses evenly through
the structure.

They are are extremely strong for their weight, and encloses the greatest
volume of space for the smallest surface area.

They can resist extremes of storm and wind, and has been tested in extreme
weather condition around the world.

The Distance Early Warning Line Domes in Canada, and During 1975, a dome was
constructed at the South Pole, where its resistance to snow and wind loads
is important.

Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station (1975-2003). The Dome was 50 meters (164
ft) wide and 16 meters (52 ft) high, with 14×24 m (46x79 ft) steel
archways, modular buildings, fuel bladders, and equipment.

Detached buildings within the dome housed instruments for monitoring the
upper and lower atmosphere and for numerous and complex projects.

The "Pillow Dome" was invented by James Tennant Baldwin the American
industrial designer. This transparent, insulated structure of aluminium and

Teflon is used in the Eden Project in Cornwall, England.

This is a steel frame with an inflated skin of hexagonal cells stretched
over it. The hexagons are sealed at the edges and form a thermal blanket,
which insulate the buildings.

Two huge enclosed domes are linked together, and with several smaller domes,
they provide habitats for plant species from around the world.
The first dome has a tropical environment, and the second a Mediterranean environment one.

A computer-controlled environmental control system that regulates the
temperature and humidity in each dome

Drawbacks
Geodesic domes have many drawbacks, especially where they are used to
provide living accommodation.

The construction has a great many intersecting surfaces, compared with
conventional structures, and all of these must be waterproof.

The surface covering is a problem due to the continuous series of flat areas
which fall away in all directions.

Access for repair and maintenance is difficult as nothing is flat, there is
no ridge, and depending on the materials, may need even greater than normal
care to avoid damage.

The need to let light in and lack of suitable flexible materials is a
problem. Flexing of structures due to normal atmospheric heating and cooling
again puts much more stress on the waterproof seals.

The curvature of the sides makes the inside space slightly more difficult to
use.

The most effective roofing method is the tile or shingle. This runs into
problems near the top of the dome as the angle flattens - keeping water out
here is difficult.

FORMAL DRESSES

One method is to arrange a single piece ‘cap', or arrange a steeper pointed
top, to cover this area.

Some domes have been constructed of plastic sheets arranged to overlap and
shed water.

Lloyd Kahn (pioneer of Green Building and Green Architecture) was influenced
by Buckminster Fuller, and during 1968 he started building geodesic domes.

He became coordinator of the building of 17 domes at Pacific High School, an
in the Santa Cruz mountains.

Experimental geodesic domes were made from plywood, aluminium, sprayed foam,
and vinyl. Children built their own domes and lived in them.

Having lived in a dome for a year, Kahn decided domes did not work well: He
calls domes "smart but not wise".
He lists problems -

The dome shape makes various items difficult to accommodate - chimneys, soil
vents, fire escapes.

The convention rectangular shape of materials leads to major wastage when
cutting the triangular sections usually used.

Windows can be 10 to 15 times more expensive.

Labour costs are high for wiring.

The interior shape makes internal walls more difficult to construct

There can be problems with privacy, smells, sound nuisance, furniture
fitting, and lack of headroom by walls at upper levels.

Is Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity Real or Fake?

Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity (EHS) may seem like stuff straight out of science fiction, yet you would be astonished to discover how many people allegedly suffer from this condition. This post discusses what EHS is, explores its syndromes, and tries to find out whether indeed it's a fact or simply fiction.
Evening Dresses

Fact about electromagnetic hypersensitivity
Did You Know?
According to surveys and findings, depending on the location and subject to the variable definitions of it, electromagnetic hypersensitivity (EHS) is estimated to be prevalent anywhere from a few cases per million to five percent of the population.
EHS is a condition wherein a sufferer when exposed to electromagnetic radiations of any kind, tends to develop health problems and other physical issues. Some of the common symptoms of electromagnetic hypersensitivity reported by people who suffer from EHS include the following:

sleep disturbance
lethargy
depression
headaches
restlessness
irritability
concentration problems
forgetfulness
learning difficulties
susceptibility to infections
blood pressure abnormalities
limb and joint pains
numbness or tingling sensations
hearing loss
impaired balance
giddiness and eye problems

Rarely some people have even reported to have developed serious cardiovascular issues owing to exposure to electromagnetic radiation. Many of these symptoms of EHS seem to coincide with those of multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS). The reason behind this, it is believed, is that the susceptible members of the population tend to develop these symptoms in the presence of both radiations and chemicals in their environment.

Medical Opinion

Most members of the medical fraternity view EHS skeptically. The main reason being that almost everyone of us is bombarded with a variety of radiation from innumerable sources all day long. Apart from the artificial ones, these sources also include natural ones such as light from the Sun, and even the Earth's own magnetic field. These should have similar effects on the sufferers as the artificial ones which, in essence, are nothing more than pulsed versions of them. And yet, we don't find the majority complaining about EHS-related health problems.

A more plausible explanation to why some people suffer from EHS is that they may be allergic to certain frequencies of electromagnetic radiation. There are several examples of similar conditions such as photosensitive epilepsy―a rare condition, wherein a visual stimulus by certain frequencies of light, sends the patient into an epileptic seizure. People suffering from photosensitive epilepsy, usually, are normal when exposed to natural/normal light, but experience a seizure, typically when exposed to intense flashes of light at frequencies between 16-25 MHz. This condition has been reported only in modern times when technology has developed devices such as TV displays and computer monitors, which are capable of producing light frequencies that can trigger epileptic fits.

Sources of Electromagnetic Radiation

As noted above, there are a vast number of potential sources of EMF radiation around us. However, the following sources are cited by many sufferers to be the main culprits responsible for triggering EHS in them.

Power-frequency Emfs
Power-frequency emfs is a term used to describe electric and magnetic fields that are produced by power lines, electricity distribution substations, faults, motorized electrical alliances, high-power wiring, cars, trains etc. Several people have attributed their symptoms and health problems to living/working in proximity to such devices for a prolonged duration.

Milder EHS symptoms have been reported by exposure to common appliances such as TV and computers. Some sufferers state that the different types of artificial lighting, especially the fluorescent ones, trigger and aggravate their EHS symptoms. Cars, trams, planes, trains etc., too are known to comprise machinery that emit a significant amount of EMF radiations, which hyper-sensitive individuals might find difficult to cope with.

In a few cases, people living near power lines and/or working in proximity of power grids have reportedly accused daily exposure to radiations for the development of cancer and tumors in their bodies.

Radio-frequency Emfs
In the early 20th century, man-made radio frequencies were first used by the military in radars and weapons. The general public, by and large, however, was not affected by its use.

In the later half of the 20th century, the use of RF was already noticeable in a few everyday devices and gadgets, but it was in the 1990s that, with the advent of the mobile phones, there was an exponential growth in the exposure of civilians to RF.

Today, we live in an RF environment much different than what existed a few decades ago. There are countless gadgets including mobiles, tablets, gaming consoles, cordless telephones etc., which fill the world around us with a near infinite number of radio waves.

While the level of exposure to these waves is surely monitored and kept in check by guidelines put forth by various authorities, the fact remains that in terms of human evolution, never has our species been more exposed to such elements than now.

Therefore, there does lie a possibility that at least a few of us might not be able to tolerate this extreme amount of exposure.

Supportive Research

In 2006, a neurobiologist Hugo Schooneveld, who himself suffers from EHS, demonstrated the effects of different frequencies of radiations on different people, before the Dutch working group on EHS.

He verified that not every sufferer experiences the symptoms with the same intensity, and that in many individuals, symptoms may develop only after a particular duration of time and also exposure. He also showed how, in some people, exposure to the very low and very high amounts of radiation may not have any effect, while in-between exposures may trigger EHS symptoms.

Finally, based on his substantial clinical experience, he also concluded that albeit EMF radiations might cause only minuscule effects on the cellular level, these effects multiply leading to the development of a major issue on the organ level.

Provocation Studies

Provocation studies involve exposing the participants to both real and fake sources of EMF, and studying their reaction to both, while making sure that at no time are they aware which one is which. The basic aim of these studies is to get to the root of what causes EHS.

Several provocative studies on the effects of radiation on people have shown that there is a significant psychological factor at play. It was observed that several participants developed the same symptoms in response to both real and fake radiations. Scientists call this the 'placebo' effect.

The placebo effect shows that if an individual has a genuine fear of something (radiation in this case), that alone is sufficient for them to develop actual physical effects in response to exposure. It further explains that if a subset of the general population, with the help of media coverage or some other means, is led to believe that radiations can affect their health, they might actually start developing symptoms in response.

Treatment

Since a majority of the medical community doesn't recognize EHS as a valid disorder, there isn't a direct line of treatment available for it. Also, the non-uniformity of the symptoms seen among sufferers further adds to the complication of finding an effective cure, but they are a rare minority.

Is Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity Real or Fake?

The World Health Organization has reached the following conclusion with regards to EHS:

EHS is characterized by a variety of non-specific symptoms that differ from individual to individual. The symptoms are certainly real and can vary widely in their severity. Whatever its cause, EHS can be a disabling problem for the affected individual. EHS has no clear diagnostic criteria and there is no scientific basis to link EHS symptoms to EMF exposure. Further, EHS is not a medical diagnosis, nor is it clear that it represents a single medical problem.
Evening Dresses
To simply call EHS a fake condition would be apathetic. There might be evidence against it, but we simply cannot turn a deaf ear to the growing hue and cry of the sufferers. Whether psychological or otherwise, it is necessary that EHS be recognized as a legitimate condition, and appropriate measures be taken to treat the ones who suffer from it. At the same time, scientists, governments, and other major health organizations should all come together and pool their resources while trying to get to the bottom of this 'disease' of modern times.

Dirty Rotten Spammers!

Dirty Rotten Spammers!

Since the launch of Angie's DIARY three years ago, we have been under ever increasing attack by spammers and hackers. Lately our staff has been inundated by extra work because of it.

FORMAL DRESSES

It started out with relatively innocent "comment spam". These comments are made by marketers to attract readers to their websites with a hidden link in their comment or address. A wonderful piece of software (plugin) called Askimet, filters most of this type of SPAM and directs it to a kind of purgatory, where these suspicious comments can be checked for legitimacy and eventually be trashed. A member of our staff will be occupied with this for about thirty minutes every day, as we receive 200-500 of these comments on a daily basis. Still this is a given that we've learned to live with.

Dirty Rotten Spammers! spam 300x168

About three months ago, some hackers managed to "compromise" the site in such a serious way that it took us days (and many sleepless nights) to resurrect the magazine in all its former glory.

This time we decided to raise our level of protection to a whole new standard. Amongst the various software patches, anti-virus plugins and the like, we added dedicated software to deny automated spambots to access the site. This software checks various online databases to verify if the commenter is blacklisted or uses illegal procedures to connect. If so, access is denied.

This new approach worked fine for a while as it decimated the amount of SPAM. Actually it still does, but as the popularity of the magazine is on the rise, so is the amount of spammers & hackers and their motivation to do their best to outsmart us, trying to push their publicities and/or do the maximum damage to the magazine.

FORMAL DRESSES

Since a couple of weeks, we started receiving massive amounts of registrations. Our initial euphoria quickly evaporated as we realized that most of them (you've guessed it) were SPAM-registrations. Again we had to raise our security standard, and introduce "CAPTCHA" against this new kind of SPAM coming our way. We apologize for these potentially user-unfriendly measures, but we had no choice.

As it is our policy to keep our registration procedure free and public, these SPAM-registrations are made to be able to post all kinds of publicity, cloaked as legitimate articles, often in the beauty & health categories, as well as medical and well-being, but not restricted to those. This presented us with a new logistical problem. How to filter these seemingly legitimate articles from the daily batch of "real" postings? The painful answer is to simply check them one by one…

After struggling with these issues, we applied even more radical solutions on our online magazine Angie's DIARY to contain this aggravation to a level that can be considered "workable". Still, the mere fact that we have to spend so much time and effort on a daily basis before we can actually start doing our real job (developing the magazine, reviewing the articles, stories and poems, searching and creating accompanying visuals etc., etc…) is simply mind-boggling!

I was at a dinner party with some medics yesterday, when the conversation turned to stress in the work place.

It transpires that the waiting rooms of doctor's surgeries are overflowing with stressed out managers and executives who complain of too much work and too little time.

Whether you're Superman or Wonder Woman, there comes a time when you have to take your cape to the cleaners and slow down before putting it back on.

How Did The Dollar Become The Global Reserve Currency

Evening Dresses
Evening Dresses
The United States dollar became a global reserve currency by the end of the 20th century, and since then, has been the world's most dominant currency. This  post explains how the dollar has become the global reserve currency.
Reason why dollar became the global reserve currency
Quick Info
Prior to the U.S. Dollar, in the eighteenth and the nineteenth century, the British sterling pound reigned supreme as the global reserve currency. Post the Second World War, however, the pound lost its supremacy when the dollar became the world's reserve currency.
As of the 21st century, the U.S. dollar is the most dependable and widely held currency. A reserve currency is a currency that is controlled by the governments of different countries as a part of their foreign exchange reserves. It is considered to be dependable and safe and is used in foreign transactions.
Evening Dresses
The citizens of the countries that issue a reserve currency need not exchange their currency, since it is globally accepted. The paragraphs below provide an overview of how the dollar became the world reserve currency.

What is Reserve Currency

Reserve currency is held by governments in sufficiently large quantities for international payments.
In the earlier decades, it consisted of gold and silver, but later, it included the U.S. dollar and other currencies.
Back then, the term, 'reserve', meant that cash can be exchanged for gold (or any expensive commodity).
At a time when most of countries followed the gold standard, the British pound sterling arose as the trusted reserve currency, due to the contribution of UK to world trade and global economy.
The world found it convenient to trust the Bank of England and deal with pounds rather than gold.
Post the Second World War, the economy of UK grew weaker, and the dollar rose in prominence as the reserve currency.

The Aftermath of the World Wars

The First World War

Prior to the World War, Britain reigned supreme in the world.
With the onset of the 20th century, however, they had begun to lose several of their colonies and consequently, power.
The First World War was a very expensive conflict for the British. As per sources, they spent more than 25% of their GDP on the war, lost more than 24% of their foreign assets, and incurred horrendous debts - equivalent to around 135% of their GDP.
Consequently, from being the world's foremost economic leader, Britain came down to the point of handling heavy economic damage, unemployment (which was at its peak in 1921), and weak productivity; in order to stabilize itself, the country borrowed heavily from the US, which emerged as a reliable nation, primarily because it entered late into the war.
According to sources, the United States spent approximately USD 32 billion on First World War, which amounted to around 52% of their GDP at that time.
During the war, Europe had purchased armaments and other goods from the U.S., and after the war ended, most European nations experienced difficult economic conditions along with Great Britain.
The two years after the war saw a very mild stability, though the situation was certainly better than the rest of Europe.
In the year 1920, the Great Depression hit the United States, which massively affected the global economy.
There were several reasons for this. Primarily, the armed forces returned to normal civilian life, which created a widespread unemployment. There was a downfall in the labor union power, which was at its peak during the war due to the continuous requirement of goods and services.
To combat inflation, the Federal Reserve Bank increased the interest rates, which is viewed by some experts as an incorrect monetary policy.
In response to the recession, the government organized committees that contributed to unemployment relief.
By the end of 1921, it was inferred that the contractionary monetary policy of the Federal Reserve Bank was a major contributor to the recession. Towards the beginning of 1922, the economy showed signs of improvement.

The Second World War

Before the Second World War began, the U.S. economy was moderately balanced.
When Britain declared war on Germany, the former used up all their reserves (gold and cash), and borrowed large sums from the U.S. to pay for ammunition and raw material.
Thus, during the war, the entire labor force of the U.S. was employed to supply material for the war. In other words, the war helped catapult the U.S. economy into what is referred to as the 'Golden Age'. Factory production returned to full capacity, and productivity jumped to new highs.
After the war, the capital exports of the British were down by 37%, their reserves depleted, and the British were dependent on the U.S. for military and financial support. Thus, the downfall of the pound sterling was one of the principal reasons for the increased dependence on the dollar.
After the victory of the Allied Forces, as described by economic experts, there was a pattern of technical change, which saw a considerable increase in labor and capital productivity.
In order to avoid situations that caused the Great Depression, the Bretton Woods System was formulated, whose principal goals were to return to the gold standard, stabilize the exchange rate, and finance post-war reconstruction and trade deficits.

The Bretton Woods System

The Bretton Woods System was an agreement signed by 730 delegates from the 44 Allied nations.
It was signed at the Mount Washington Hotel, Bretton Woods, New Hampshire, United States of America (hence the name), in the beginning of July 1944.
Back then, gold played a vital role international transactions, and currency values were determined as per their relationship to the gold standard.
The agreement thus, stated that every country must adopt a monetary policy such that the exchange rate of its currency is maintained within a fixed value of gold (give or take a percentage of the value).
The reasons for drafting this agreement primarily included the aftermath of the Great Depression―the planning committee decided that for a stable global economy, the world required a proper regulated system that could strongly control the value of currencies and effectively dominate global monetary affairs.
The IMF was designated to manage the payment imbalances.
However, as the wheels of the century turned, gold production wasn't sufficient enough to match the increasing demands of global trade.
Consequently, the world found it difficult to follow the fixed exchange rate set by the agreement.
Eventually, in August 1971, the United States terminated the conversion of dollars to gold, and put an end to the Bretton Woods System. This event is called the 'Nixon Shock', and this is how the dollar became the global reserve currency.

The Significance of the Dollar

The Fiat Currency

With the end of the Bretton Woods System, the U.S. brought about the dominance of the Fiat currency.
The relationship of the U.S. dollar to gold (USD 35 an ounce of gold) made the dollar an all-powerful currency, and the consensus was that the dollar was more flexible and earned interest.
The gold reserves in the U.S. depleted dramatically around the late 1960s. The U.S., therefore, decided to revalue the dollar at a higher amount and abandon the gold standard completely.
Despite the fact that the dollar was no longer linked to gold, it still provided stability and helped settle international trading accounts.

The Reign of the Dollar

A reserve currency needs to hold its value over time.
The period between 1949 to 2003 was when the power of the dollar was at its peak, though there were quite a bit of highs and lows.
America followed a monetary system based on its own rules―the unilateral termination of the Bretton Woods agreement, being one of them.
The Fiat currency gained complete prominence over the gold standard, and the globe began to place its trust over the dollar.
One of the many reasons the dollar remained so strong is the strength of the American capital abroad.
With free-floating currencies, the overall inflation shot up and prices increased steeply.
The 1980s again witnessed slow growth and high unemployment, while the subsequent decades saw a considerable growth in the economy.
The U.S. dollar became the single, stable currency for international holdings and foreign exchange reserves.

The Economic Recession of 2007

The financial crisis of 2007 is reported to be one of the most severe cases of recession since the Great Depression.
The situation may be attributed to the liquidity crisis that took place in August 2007, when withdrawals from three major hedge funds were terminated.
The crisis affected the real estate market, innumerable businesses, the stock market, large financial corporations, and led to the loss of trillions of U.S. dollars.
Not just the U.S., but the entire global economy collapsed due to the recession. According to the IMF, huge U.S. and European banks lost more than one trillion U.S. dollars between 2007 to 2009.
To rectify the situation, banks had begun to cut down on the interest rates, and many economic reforms were introduced in the U.S. and Europe.
The condition of developing countries was worse; however, a majority of them depended on the strength of the dollar as a reserve currency, and the recession weakened its power to a considerable extent.
One of the primary reasons for the recession was the over-leveraging of the banks and financial institutions in the U.S.
Prior to the crisis, banks had begun to undertake rather risky investments, which led to increased debt burdens.
All in all, the economic recession of 2007 was one of the worst in history, and even though the situation is better today, the importance and dependability of the dollar has considerably reduced.

The Future and Potential Threats to the Dollar

The shocking aftermaths of the 2007 economic crisis led to increased speculation and debate about the dependability of the dollar as a reserve currency.
China has requested the IMF to consider its currency as the global reserve currency.
China has emerged as one of the foremost global economies, and has contributed to a substantial percentage of the global GDP.
The Japanese yen is also a potential threat to the U.S. dollar, for Japan followed sound fiscal policies to increase the value of its currency in the global market.
The Euro and the pound sterling are the other two currencies considered by the IMF as the possible choices for replacing the dollar.

The Dollar: A Currency of Choice - Period

If the recession has reduced the significance of the dollar, why is it still being held as a potentially dependable currency? Experts suggest that one of the reasons for this may be the absence of an equally strong alternative.
According to the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER), the recession seems to have ended around the middle of 2009.
While a majority of the experts expected the dollar to grow significantly weaker (which it did, to an extent), its importance has been strengthened by the crisis.
There have been mixed reviews to this situation―many have turned against the dollar and decided that it is not stable anymore, while many have been in favor of the dollar.
One of the simplest reasons for this may be that there are fewer safe assets in the world now―and investors will want safe assets. The Eurozone, which ran strong for quite a while, seems to be less reliable. Japan resists the market inflow since it would affect its exports. Thus, the U.S. still stands strong as a reliable option.
Since emerging markets want to protect themselves against financial disasters, they are willing to finance the debts of the U.S., despite the fact that the dollar might depreciate over time.
Thus, the world is willing to pay a heavy price for safety and protection from economic crisis, and the dollar still holds the title of the safest possible reserve currency.
Evening Dresses
While there have been continuous debates about the Yuan or the Euro replacing the dollar as the reserve currency, the current claim is still held by the United States. However, reliable reports suggest that the Yuan has already met the conditions laid down by the IMF. The dollar is still all powerful, but it may not be long before the Yuan becomes the global reserve currency, provided the United States affirms the same.

What is Good Teaching ?

What is Good Teaching ?

"A teacher who is attempting to teach without inspiring the pupil with a desire to learn is hammering on cold iron." -- Horace Mann

"They may forget what you said but they will never forget how you made them feel." - Carol Buchner

"The teacher who is indeed wise does not bid you to enter the house of wisdom but rather leads you to the threshold of your mind." -- Kahlil Gibran

We know the books are important, the pencil, the computer, the white and blackboard and so are the chairs to sit on, but if there is no motivated and inspiring teacher in front of the chairs, if there is no such teacher to write with chalk on the blackboard and to teach ... then there is no learning, no reading, no maths, no passing on of knowledge, ethics and values, no instilling of a "love to learn ethos" in the student.

All students must have  had hundreds of teachers in their lifetimes and a very few of these teachers they would remember as being exceptionally good. What are the qualities that combine to create an excellent, memorable teacher? Why do some teachers inspire students to work three times harder than they normally would, while others inspire students to avoid their classes ? Why do students learn more from some teachers than others?

Here I have  focused on the four essential qualities that distinguish exceptional teachers:

Knowledge,
Communication skills,
Interest, and
Respect for students.
Other major qualities that a Good teacher must have are resilience, excellence, determination, conviction, and resolve.

HUMAN HAIR WIGS

An Experiment
Here's an experiment I had done in one of my  earlier assignments. The results may surprise you. Go into one of the classes you are teaching and have your students take out a sheet of paper. Ask them to list for you the qualities they feel are important in a good teacher. Ask them to identify the qualities they admire in the best teachers they have had. Then give the students enough time to think about it and write something down. Five minutes is good, but ten might be better. Let them answer the questions anonymously if they desire.

What you will get if you combine all of the responses is a fascinating collage of ideas. I have found that most of the responses fall into two specific categories:

1) a set of "core qualities" that students recognize in good teachers, and

 2) a set of "specific skills" that are developed by good teachers.

"Core qualities" are the essential characteristics needed to be a good teacher. I would like to concentrate on these core qualities in this article as under.

1. Knowledge

Students have consistently and clearly targeted as the number one quality of a good teacher exactly what you would expect: knowledge of the subject. You must be an expert in your field-both theoretical and practical –preferably with an industry interface and experience if you are going to be a good teacher in a Management college or Business School. This is a prerequisite.

2. Communication
The second core quality that good teachers possess is the ability to communicate their knowledge and expertise to their students. You may be the greatest expert ever in your field, but what would happen if you lectured in  a style and language the students are not able to comprehend clearly? How much would your students learn?

It is a common misconception at the College level that knowledge of a subject is all that's required to be a good teacher; that the students should be willing and able to extract the meat from what you say- regardless of how it is delivered (even if it is delivered in a incomprehending language or different style). This might be true at the post graduate level, but elsewhere it is definitely untrue. It is especially untrue at the undergraduate level. The teacher's job is to take advanced knowledge and make it accessible to the students. A good teacher allows students to understand the material, and to understand what it means (because it is one thing to understand how nuclear bombs work, but quite another to understand what nuclear bombs mean).

A good teacher can take a subject and help make it crystal clear to the students. A bad teacher can take that same material and make it impenetrable. Or a bad teacher can devote so little time and effort to preparation that the material presented is intrinsically confusing and disorganized. A good teacher is willing to expend the effort needed to find innovative and creative ways to make complicated ideas understandable to their students, and to fit new ideas into the context available to the student. A good teacher can explain complicated material in a way that students can understand and use.

There is a saying, "Give me a fish and I eat for a day, teach me to fish and I eat for a lifetime." This is the philosophy of a good teacher. Give your students an answer and they can solve one problem, but show students the techniques needed to find the answer for themselves and they can become self-sufficient in the field. Students need to be shown how to apply the new techniques you teach to problem solving.

3. Interest
A good teacher starts with a firm knowledge of the subject, and builds on that with a clarity and understanding designed to help students master the material. The best teachers then go one step further. Because good teachers are interested in the material being taught, they make the class interesting and relevant to the students. Knowledge is worthless unless it is delivered to the students in a form they can understand. But the effort expended making the material understandable is wasted if the students are disinterested  when it is delivered, or if the students can see no point in learning the material.

Good teachers recognise this, and work hard to make their material relevant. They show students how the material will apply to their lives and their careers. Bad teachers make material "relevant" by threatening students with failure on a test. Good teachers go far beyond this: they make students want to learn the material by making it interesting.

This is one of the things that makes industry and business examples  so important and vital to learning in a business school or college.Industry interface and practical real life examples make the ideas discussed in class exciting and important to the teacher, as well as to the students. If the teacher isn't interested in what's being taught, then why should the students be?

4. Respect
Good teachers always possess these three core qualities: knowledge, the ability to convey to students an understanding of that knowledge, and the ability to make the material interesting and relevant to students. Complementing these three is a fourth: quality: good teachers have a deep-seated concern and respect for the students in the classroom. Why else would a teacher put in the time and effort needed to create a high quality class?

The creation of a good class requires an immense amount of work. You don't simply come up with clear explanations, industry cases and examples and experiments for the class off the top of your head. You don't create fair, consistent, high quality tests, questionaires and homework assignments (read "learning experiences") five minutes before you hand them out. You don't figure out ways to integrate new materials and research into a class in an understandable way on your way to your college or institute  in the morning. You work at this sort of quality all the time. You spend time with your students so you can learn about holes in their understanding. You read and write and create to build an exciting and interesting class every day. The only thing that would drive you to do that is a concern and respect for the students in your classroom.

Conclusion

"The mediocre teacher tells.  The good teacher explains.  The superior teacher demonstrates.  The great teacher inspires".  ~William Arthur Ward

When you strive and work to become a good teacher and to create a good class, the four core qualities are essential:knowledge, the skills to convey that knowledge, the ability to make the material you are teaching interesting and relevant, and a deep-seated respect for the students.Without these four core qualities, good teaching will just not take place.

Good teachers make learning so much fun that it makes the students feel like they could do anything they wanted to do. The positive seeds teachers plant in their students keep on growing throughout their lives.

"The best teachers teach from the heart, not from the book".  ~Author Unknown

"What a teacher writes on the blackboard of life can never be erased".  ~Author Unknown

Global warming: How poverty supports the most dangerous kind of emissions

Global warming: How poverty supports the most dangerous kind of emissions

The role of poverty in many aspects of life is a well-documented chronicle which stares the world in the face. Poverty has immense contribution to gender imbalance, abuse of rights, inability to access good food, water, healthcare amongst others.

FORMAL DRESSES

This time, poverty has revealed that its tentacles are also in control of the transport and power systems in some of the third world countries especially experimenting ones of Africa. Nigeria is one or perhaps the only country in Africa housing over 15 million of various versions of 2-stroke engines. The Green Society of Nigeria has said that these messy and easily worn out engines are on every second of the day emitting partially combusted but very dangerous fuel gases to the ecosystem. The global fight against depletion of the ozone layer aimed at protecting the biodiversity would not be complete if this menace described as ‘Asian Dilemma' by Anumita Roychowdhury, associate director of the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) in India is not addressed with immediate alacrity in all third world nations of Africa including Nigeria where these two and three wheeled engines predominate currently.

Illustrating this challenge in Nigeria, there are three types of 2-stroke engines that dominate the system. The two-wheeled bikes are called ‘Okada' while the three-wheeled ones are named ‘keke or Napep'. Yet there is another that has claimed so many lives in Nigeria called ‘I pass my neighbour' meaning that I am better than my neighbour. This last one actually is a power generator. Nigeria has a totally collapsed power sector and cost of running bigger generators is not friendly to over 100 million pockets in Nigeria due to the fact that many are still living below the poverty line.  The introduction of ‘I pass my neighbour' was more or less like saying that a messiah has come. Most of them that mainly come from China cost as little as $55-$60 per unit. This pocket-friendliness made the acquisition of ‘I pass my neighbour' a-must-have for every home in Nigeria irrespective of how poor the family is since the national power system is more or less moribund. This also goes to the nation's transportation system. This system can better be said to be in shambles as almost all transportation activities in the country are done on the roads rendering severe pressures on the roads. But ‘Okada' is a wonderful choice for fast and flexible movements within the city of Lagos and others that are traffic-jam ridden. The three-wheeler has adequately replaced car taxis and so families, friends and associates these days fancy it to cruise in ‘keke or napep' with dangerous gases emitted behind them as they cruise.  People choose these engines to get around and power their houses because they are cheap, powerful and easy to fix. But in the reverse, the environment and human health are compromised. And as cities balloon and populations grow, the number of journeys and two-stroke engines are bound to grow with it if uncontrolled.

FORMAL DRESSES

Setting up the Euro 111 by the European Union is good but reasonably not enough to halt the trend if the 3rd world governments of these nations are not made to understand the enormity of problems the use of these engines could impact on the entire earth. There is need for cross-fertilization of ideas and a strong push for the right practices to be observed in these nations.

Just as was the case in the entire Asia and India-a co-inventor of these engines before 2004, about 75-80% of the traffic constitutes these machines, so is the case in Nigeria today. Due to poverty and inability for most people into the transportation sector to acquire 4 stroke engines for their businesses they go for these pocket friendly 2-strokes which must run by mixing petrol with engine oil. Experts have said that because 2-stroke engines burn petrol-oil mixture, they emit more smoke, more carbon monoxide, more hydrocarbons and more particulate matter than the engines that run on petrol alone. In effect, 2-stroke engines are highly wasteful in the use of fuel. Experts confirmed that up to 40% of the petrol and oil go out of the exhaust pipe not combusted leading to release of more dangerous carbons, nitrogen gas, sulphur, hydrocarbons as well as fine dust- all being much more toxic than the ones emitted by any 4-stroke engine. All these toxic compounds contribute immensely to urban air pollution.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has stressed that these classes of pollution are responsible for air pollution leading to the deaths of more than half a million people a year. About two-thirds of the residents of Delhi and Calcutta suffered from respiratory symptoms such as common cold and dry and wet cough before the government put pressure to end usage of such vehicles. WHO has also classified that urban pollution ranks 13th greatest contributor to disease burden and death worldwide. On the other hand, Mrs Tokunbo Jakande, executive director, Green Society of Nigeria said that research shows that these classes of emissions contribute immensely to the depletion of the ozone layer faster than would emissions from a 4-stroke engine.

Before the tricycles known as keke or napep in Nigeria are banned in Thailand, it was estimated that one keke is equivalent to 50 cars in terms of gaseous emissions and contributed 47% of pollution particulates in the air.  Today the nation has curtailed on the use of these vehicle. Philippines did same and India has also gone ahead to almost reduce to zero the use of these vehicular mess even though it is still a manufacturer of 2-stroke engine. The proliferation of these engines in Africa's third world countries should be worrisome. Yes, many local respiratory related deaths are either not investigated or believed to be effects of tobacco smoking; it is becoming evident that most cases linked to tobacco smoking in these countries are actually caused by 2-stroke engine emissions in the air.

There is urgent need to cut down on the usage of these engines but again, for this to be effective, the government must provide an alternative. The snag would be if the affected governments would have enough political-will to tackle this menace which has direct local and global implications on the environment and human. When Bangkok toughened up vehicle inspections and emissions standards in 2000, 2-wheelers were over 96% of the city's traffic. However, March 2004, released the result that only 40% was in use with 50% out of the streets, according to Supat Wangwongwatana, deputy director general of Thailand's Pollution Control Department. Africa nations would need to also adopt what Philippines did by offering interest free loan for operators of 2-stroke engines to upgrade to 4-stroke. This approach would appear most workable option as it is not easy to fix overnight their power and transportation systems. When 2-stroke baby taxis were phased out of Dhaka, Bangladesh, in 2002, particulate concentrations dropped up to 40%, with carbon monoxide as well as hydrocarbons fell significantly, S.M.A. Bari, director of engineering at the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority said.

Learn How to Fly Fish

Learn How to Fly Fish

Fly fishing brings back the time when ancient man needed to hunt or to fish in order to eat. These days, fly fishing is considered a hobby as it is no longer required for man to fish for his food. The appeal lies in the effort you have to make before you can actually feed yourself.

FORMAL DRESSES

So how does one fly fish and what is the difference of fly fishing with any regular kind of fishing? To learn about fly fishing, you must first learn the difference between fly fishing and regular fishing.

With regular fishing, you throw in the bait into the water. The bait is attached to a light and thin monofilament that only reaches up to a certain distance. Then, you wait for the fish to take the bait.

For fly fishing, the line is cast instead of just the bait. The line is heavy enough to propel any lightweight bait or lure through long distances. Some fishes like trout are caught this way as they don't get too spooked by your nearby presence.

Now that you know about the difference between regular fishing and fly fishing, it's time to learn about fly fishing on a stream. For a beginner, it is imperative that you test your fly fishing gear on easy fishing spots first. Don't go fishing in the open sea or strong rivers yet.

Casting a line is not that complicated. Some terminologies just make it sound confusing and hard to understand. But once you get the hang of it, the technical names of the things will be the last thing on your mind.

To cast a line, connect the rod with the reel and the line. If you are new to learning about fly fishing, ask the help of an expert at the fly fishing store or let them do it for you as you watch. Next, hold the fly rod with your dominant hand with your thumb on top of the fly rod. This grip looks like you are shaking hands with someone. You should be able to feel the weight of your fishing line as you do this.

FORMAL DRESSES

The next important thing is the angle. Some fly fishers swear by a particular angle when casting but try out other angles just to find which one suit you best. There are 3 common angles to cast: overhead, 45 degrees or sidearm. For this lesson, the overhead cast will be the focus.

Hold your fly rod over your head at a two o' clock angle then, pull back and cast your line. Make sure your rod travels in a straight line instead of going backwards and forwards in a curved motion. Do not cast your rod in an arc motion as your line might get snagged on to the ground as you pull back. The rod should bend as you pull back (otherwise known as being loaded) in order to transfer the energy from the rod to the line to propel it forward.

Practice this move over and over or watch videos online on how to do the overhead cast. As with all sports activities, casting also takes a lot of practice to perfect. Take lessons from pros if you must.
